What is non-destructive testing?
Non-destructive testing consists of a number of non-invasive techniques that determine the integrity of a material, component or structure, or quantitatively measure some characteristic of an object. Put simply, it is testing without harming the object being tested. Typical applications are:
- Flaw detection
- Leak detection
- Location determination
- Dimensional measurements
- Structure & microstructure characterisation
- Estimating mechanical & physical properties
- Stress & dynamic response measurement
- Material sorting
- Chemical composition determination
What is ASNT?
ASNT stands for the American Society for Non-destructive Testing, one of the most reputable certification bodies in NDT. Of its certification levels, the most sought-after is ASNT Level II.
A Level II technician can set up and calibrate test equipment, carry out inspection to codes and standards, and write work instructions for a team of technicians. They are authorised to report, interpret, evaluate and document results, and can supervise and train Level I technicians. They also know the applicable codes and standards and something of how tested products are made and used.
